People For the American Way Foundation conducts research, legal, and education work on behalf of First Amendment freedoms and democratic values; monitors, exposes, and challenges the Religious Right movement and its political allies; identifies, trains, and supports the next generation of progressive leaders through its Young People For youth leadership programs and its Young Elected Officials Network; and carries out nonpartisan voter education, registration, civic participation, and election protection activities.

Young People For (YP4) is a youth-driven and youth-led program that brings together young leaders and activists from across the nation who are eager to ensure that progressive voices are heard on critical issues, such as the judiciary, religious freedom, economic justice, civil rights and constitutional protections. This program is designed for serious people who are interested in being leaders and making a difference. Together we are building a long-term network of emerging leaders committed to protecting our nation’s fundamental rights and freedoms.

The Communications and Network Associate is a key member of the YP4 team and must be a strong organizer, facilitator and trainer, and able to manage relationships and events both on and offline. The position requires strong writing skills, substantial knowledge of the youth progressive movement, and experience with campus and/or youth organizing. This position is located in New York City and reports to the YP4 Communications Director.

General responsibilities:

  • Help manage information, training materials, and allies relevant to the YP4 Training Institute: Progressive Academy Online and other online content and resources.
  • Help manage Training Institute consultant relationships and guest speakers; maintain database of progressive conferences and trainings.
  • Help develop curriculum associated with the Progressive Academy Online in collaboration with partner organizations.
  • Work to identify the critical progressive issues facing young people and develop issue guides, fact sheets, talking points and case studies.
  • Help manage YP4’s annual national conference and state networking strategy including: help prepare materials, manuals, and handouts for all conferences; oversee partner outreach for co-sponsored events and trainings; produce networking and training events with partners and allies in each of our 11 network states.
  • Help manage the YP4 Intergenerational Network and the YP4 Fellowship Alumni program: implement a broad networking strategy to engage partners, allies and individuals who are interested in contributing to the YP4 community.
  • Provide support for other YP4 communications activities as needed.
  • Prepare periodic work plans and reports for supervisor.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Working with fellows, help manage Little Black Books and Issue Toolkits.
  • Working with key partners, help develop curriculum for six Progressive Academy Online courses each year, recruit guest speakers and outside participants, and provide support to course instructors.
  • Monitor and maintain the YP4 Intergenerational Network sign-up form online and manage outreach to Intergenerational Network members.
  • Monitor and maintain critical information about the work of YP4’s alumni.
  • Provide newsletter and website content on trainings and conferences sponsored by YP4 and our partners.
  • Initiate and manage partnership opportunities for events and trainings at national conferences and events in each of our 11 network states.
  • Update Training Institute Online with current information and resources for fellows.
  • Provide training support to in-person gatherings of fellows.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with student or youth organizing and/or leadership development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking experience.
  • Familiarity with the progressive community, progressive issues, community organizing, and the political process.
  • Demonstrated event planning and/or training background.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; must be well organized, detail-oriented and able to effectively manage competing priorities and frequent deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and communities.
  • Computer proficiency with MSOffice applications and experience in using the Internet in social networking, education and organizing.
  • Ability to work independently, with supervision, and as part as a team.
  • Ability and willingness to work additional hours when needed.
  • Computer literacy and experience in using the Internet in progressive work.
  • Experience with student or youth organizing.
