Like my use of alliteration in my title?
I could write a really long list of things I love about Brazil:
- City of God
- Gisele Bundchen
-Havaiana flip flops
- Brazilian chocolate desserts
- The Brazilian bikini
- The Brazilian Wax
- Brazilian Barbeque
Yesterday the President of Brazil Lula da Silva pledged to subsidize access to contraceptives for all Brazilian women by making monthly doses available for less than 20 cents per month. His plan will ensure that the pill can be purchased at over 100,000 pharmacies by anyone with a government-issued identification. Additionally, President Silva is offering subsidized vasectomies in addition to the 254 million condoms the government provides to the public for free each year.
America should follow in Brazil's footsteps on this and provide contraceptive access to everyone who needs it, especially for those with barriers to access.
Even though I applaud the President of Brazil for understanding the importance of preventing sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies, he still misses the mark on protecting women's health and safety. Brazilian women do not have the right to make the moral and personal decision to choose abortion if they are faced with an unintended pregnancy. As a result of the restriction, 800,000 illegal back alley abortions occur each year, killing approximately 4,000 women who would live if they had access to safe and legal procedures.
The Pope denounced Brazil's decision to provide women in Brazil with an opportunity to make private decisions about their bodies. Disgustingly, the same Pope who served in Hitler Youth during World War Two is out there talking about the sanctity of life.
I guess he doesn't understand that the best way to prevent abortions (if he hates them so much) is to provide people with access to contraception instead of scare tactics, misinformation, and rhetoric from a man who will never experience pregnancy in his life.
