Google Doing Good - SF Homeless Get Free Phone Numbers
In case you haven't heard, Google has released an awesome program in conjuction with Project CARE.
Google will be giving lifetime, free phone numbers with voicemail boxes to any homeless person who needs one. This is an ingenious program as it will allow homeless indviduals to have a stable, readily accesible phone number to put on job applications, receive medical information to, and be able to communicate with family and loved ones with.
I am really impressed with Google's track record on American based projects. Not only are they attempting to provide free, universal wire less access, are members of the One Laptop Per Child program, and run Google.org among other projects.
The greatest thing in my opinion is that a project like this is geared towards empowerment.
It will be great to see how it works out.

Great idea, but not Google's
This concept has been implemented for awhile now.
It's cool that they are funding it, but I am a little wary when a major corporation (even one as hip as Google) takes credit (at least by omission) for work that non-profits have been doing for awhile now.
Now if only we could get them to rethink their involvement in the international community.
