Score one more for Checks and Balances
A tip of the hat to another Congressional Subcommittee – in this case, the House Judiciary Committee’s Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Subcommittee chaired by Representative Jerold Nadler (D-NY) – that voted to subpoena former Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell to testify about voting problems in Ohio in the 2004 elections. You may remember that Ohio was “ground zero” in 2004 for potential irregularities that may have prevented qualified voters from voting and having their votes counted. Ken Blackwell was Ohio’s Secretary of State and chief elections official at the time. And in 2006, Blackwell, still in that role, and also running as the Republican candidate for Governor, created a number of administrative hurdles to voting, for example, restricting third party registration by making it a felony to turn in new voter registrations more than 10 days after receipt. (PFAWF and our allies went to court and were able to get a preliminary injunction making all administrative rules limiting voter registration unenforceable for the 2006 election and earlier this year the federal court issued a permanent injunction.) So, it’s good that the Subcommittee is persistent in seeking to obtain the testimony of Blackwell, who is now a Senior Fellow at the far right Family Research Council.
