Maximizing My Potential at Take Back America: March 16-19, 2008
While
flying in to Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon, it would seem that
things would be very cool on my way to the internship training session with
Yp4.org. However, immediately upon my arrival to the airport I was set into a
different trance.
My
flight was delayed. I went ahead and chilled out because I knew the situation
would work itself out; and it did. I was challenged once more after finding out
that my trip would take another two hours and eventually ending up on three
planes, and running to different terminals to ensure I was on the right flight
(due to the unorganized ticket agents for Continental Airlines).
Placed
on blast by one of the agents in a circle of people, I held my composure and
was patient and humble. Everything did come together around 2pm.
I
was nervous when arriving in Washington,
D.C. and did not know what to
expect, and if my idea of this independent magazine publisher partnership
through this program would work. Though late and tired when I walked in to the YP4
room everyone clapped for my arrival in style!
The
group continued to talk about their lives; it was so inspiring to hear that
others had been through struggle. I had already begun thinking about my own
story while listening. Kicked out at the age of fifteen and told never to come
back; I did survive (and never went back). I told the participants this and
they were stunned, but understood why I am so passionate about life and doing
for others.
Take Back America began the next morning and
for two days, I was able to interact with other like-minded individuals. I gave
out all the copies of the magazine and newspaper that I brought regarding my
goal to meet five individuals. I should have brought an abundance of them,
because I met more than five people.
Moreover,
I was able to do a mock interview with several individuals about my unique
situation within the internship group. I am already in position to do what I
want, but I still need help in order to get to the level thereafter... The
networking and trainings helped me out so much, and allowed me to see things
from a very different perspective.
Now
back in Houston, Texas
today, I understand that I am that woman; I am that sister who will do what she
has set out to do in life and will be graduating from college in December of
2008, opening up my first magazine publishing office in Houston, Texas,
and successful!
I
can see the picture now.
