Confessions of an Intern Blogger
"For one NYC intern, his blogging euphoria cost him his professional reputation..."
The secret is out! In a world with over a million blogs it's hard to believe that anyone's blog will get read by their employer. Speaking of which....is anyone out there? Yet for one NYC intern, his blogging euphoria cost him his professional reputation. Last year an intern with Comedy Central posted a blog on the inside workings and strategies of his company. Needless to say, the intern was scolded and at the very least almost lost his position if it weren't for the good humor of the management at Comedy Central ( Who would know they could laugh it off?). Today, The New York Times points out that close to 15% of fortune 500 companies have regulations in their human resource manuals restricting blogging.
This is a great reminder that professional etiquette is a constantly evolving standard that changes with time. Yesterday's office gossip is today's blog entry and tomorrow's video clip on YouTube. With expanding technology we need to evaluate the increasing ways we might annoy co-works and get caught expressing ourselves. When we think about our etiquette in the office and during classes, let's remember to switch our cell phones to vibrate, try not to get caught blogging about our boss's love life, and most importantly don't give away valuable secrets
