Hey Rachel!

I'm currently in the computer room of Camp Hope in New Orleans, LA, where I've been living for the past 2 months as an AmeriCorps *NCCC Corps Member, working with Habitat for Humanity leading groups of volunteers through rebuilding homes in the upper and lower 9th wards. It's been an absolutely incredible experience; I've learned so much. I could build you small shelter.

Hope all is well.

US House of Representatives

I am going to be in D.C. this summer interning in Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur's (OH-9) office. I am living in a frat house in College Park at the University of Maryland but working 9-5 on the Hill. Hopefully I'll also be able to take a math course at GWU, and I'm signed up for the course "The Federal Courts at a Crossroads: Our Rights and the Courts’ Future at Stake in an Election Year!" with YP4.

If anyone else will be in D.C. get in touch with me!

Glad to have you in the course, Luke!

That sounds like quite a summer.

For anyone who's reading and wants to check out the course, here's where to learn more and sign up for The Federal Courts at a Crossroads.

I'm in NYC!

The YP4 staff is mostly in NYC this summer, but we will also be traveling this summer to places around the country. We'll keep you all posted on our travels to DC and elsewhere. Be sure to stop by the office if you find yourself in the Big Apple. We'll also be organizing some events here in town for area fellows and interns at progressive organizations. Stay tuned...

Pimpin' my PBS ya'll

Bonjour, this is Britte Marsh!

I'll be spending my summer in San Francisco interning with "This Week in Northern California" at KQED, the bay area's PBS affiliate. I'll also be taking two summer school courses, Advanced Magazine Writing and History of California, at SFSU and working as a hostess on the weekends...and blueprinting, of course. WHEW! It's going to be a productive and foggy summer!

Researching & fellowshiping

Fellow fellows,

This summer I'll be spending most of my time at the YP4 office in NYC working on social research (woo hoo!). Specifically, I'm in the process of transforming my ongoing research project on first-generation college students into an awesome blueprint.

I'll also be traveling to LA and Houston with CLEO for some more LSAT prep. Good luck to everyone taking the June LSATs--you can do it!

At home, but working hard

Hello to all!

Last week, I went to protest at the Exxon Mobil Shareholder’s meeting here in Downtown Dallas. Several groups were represented including the Dallas Peace Center, Iraq Vets Against War, and Texas State Representative Lon Burnham was also there in support of the cause. The two main messages were “Stop funding junk science; explore renewable sources” and “No blood for oil.” We got a ton of press so you guys should google it.

I'm at home for the summer working hard with the Texas Campaign for the Environment. We just shifted the focus of our current campaign, which was strengthening the rules for the Texas Producer TakeBack Law (HB 2714) that was unanimously passed last session. The bill, which goes into effect this September, states that Computer Manufacturers are responsible for recovering and recycling obsolete products from consumers. Unfortunately, the bill didn't cover televisions. So now we are working on another Corporate Responsibility/ Legislative Campaign. We're pressuring Panasonic and Samsung to take back their products for convenient, free recycling.

We're also in a good place now nationally with a coalition of other interested groups called the Electronics Takeback Coalition. Now that a big (and RED) state like Texas passed an electronics takeback law, it'll be a lot easier to pass a Federal Law. This is our ultimate goal because a Federal Law can properly address issues of exporting E-waste to developing countries and prison labor. If you want to know where your state stands on this issue, or how to help pass a local statewide E-waste law, check out www.computertakeback.com.

Dallas resources

I asked a friend from Dallas about local resources. Not sure whether your original question was present when she looked, but:

Great to see someone from Rowlett/ SMU involved in social action. I assume you are wondering if I have a long list of enviros in Dallas to network with the coalition... She should do good networking down in Austin with all the ex-Dell and electronics people. Anna Pierce runs the enviro action center at UT and is amazing... they should e-mail. As for Dallas, I don't know of any groups to work with who are not in the loop already unless she tried to reach out to progressive faith groups, not done as much in Dallas as it is in other parts of the country.

Small World

I actually know Anna! We were in the Sierra Club at Richland Community College and I've already emailed her about coming in to speak to our staff about the work that she's doing with the Re-Energize Texas Coalition. We have an office in Austin as well that networks with all the hippies down there.

It wasn't really a question, just encouraging others to get involved with the E-waste issue in their own city/state. The more state bills that pass, the easier it'll be to pass a national law.

Summer in Chicago

Right now, I am living and working in Chicago, researching Herpes Simplex and Ebola Viruses as well as working in the College of Business at UIC. Those are the day jobs.

I have been volunteering at a homeless shelter on the west side of Chicago and it has really opened my eyes to the shadow of poverty that is cast over this city. I am planning more events through my university that will raise awareness of this problem, but also encourage college students to stand up and counteract it.

I'm working on a myriad of events for the Fall, taking on problems of inadequate urban health care and abysmal literacy rates. I'm in the creative phase in a lot of those plans. Any ideas for fundraising to promote these causes are welcomed on my end.

Pugnaciously yours,
Emily A. Finchum
