Generation Vote, and then What?

YP4 and its partners in the youth vote coalition, Generation Vote, a project of the Generational Alliance, convened over the last 3 days to develop a comprehensive and coordinated plan around our voter mobilization work this year. It was inspiring to see years worth of infrastructure and relationship-building translate into real power in key states that is likely to have an impact on elections at all levels. While Young People For isn't supporting many of the ground troops in the various voter registration, education and GOTV campaigns, our presence and reason for existence is an important reminder to electoral-focused organizations in the progressive movement: YP4 was established in 2004 to address the cyclical abandonment that young people face at the end of every election year. At that time, we had a fellowship to offer. Thanks to the Generational Alliance and other leadership development organizations, on November 5, 2008, we will have a movement to offer. Young people politicized by this election and events over the last few years will have outlets and support networks for their activism. That much we know. We are entering a new political era and we want to be ready, so we need your help. What will young people need in terms of tools, resources and access points in order to move progressive policies, issues and ideas forward after the election?

I'll update this page with your comments and any actions we take on your suggestions.

How to move our ideas forward...

No matter what happens on election day, we've got our work cut out for us. Young people are on the front lines of making change now and we'll still be on the front lines on November 5th.

We need to continue to be innovative, creative and courageous in how we decide to move progressive policies, issues and ideas forward.

Take a look at the work of fellows around the country.

I encourage everyone to comment on the Blueprints and identify resources, tools and strategies that will strengthen our collective work. Let's challenge each other, let's share ideas, let's share our successes and challenges in making change and building progressive power.
