Religion, Good or Bad?
Religion is one of the many institutions in the society, despite its supposed pristine nature, some scholars, though most of them being atheists have claimed that it actually brings about more harm than good. In this contemporary society, what is one to believe?, with most individuals even attesting to that fact that secularization is occurring bit by bit and the influence that religion had ages ago is waning. What positive function did religion or does religion still play in society? The acclaimed father of functionalism Emile Durkheim laid down some of the positive aspects of religion in his study of totemism. In this study, Durkheim claimed that religion helps to bring people together through gatherings that ultimately occur during life crises such as death, marriages, birth and other unexplained circumstances that seem to transcend the ordinary human’s line of thought. In this sense, the individuals in society recognize that they cannot survive in isolation and therefore commit themselves to joining social groups who have been there for them through life threatening situations. Furthermore, when people worship together, they feel this sense of belonging, a sense that they are part of something extraordinary and in the long run come to believe and trust the society since most of the individual have the same common values and beliefs. Religion also explains unpleasant life vicissitudes that may occur to any individual and provides them with reasons why such occur and ways of dealing with them.
Despite these positive functions that religion plays in the society, other scholars have dedicated time to study the dysfunctions this institution has to the society. One of the most popular views is that given by Karl Marx. In his words, ‘religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature…..and the soul of the soulless’. He viewed religion as being a tool to continue the wide scale domination of the working class by the ruling class. To him, religion gives the proletariats reasons to wallow in poverty since it grants them fortunes in the afterlife. In this sense, religion is of negative influence since instead of providing equality to members of the institution, it further widens the gap between them. Others have argued that religion also brings about inequality by subjugating the females in the institutions to play second fiddle roles to that of the men. There are not as many female pastors as there are males in the church and Islam does not even condone the thought of a female imam. Others have reasoned that religion has caused some of the major conflicts that have occurred in the world and therefore distrust the institution, and even till today some of the ongoing conflicts occurring have religious undertones, and so, just how much positive influence can religion actually be said to have?

Some pretty awful stuff has been done in the name of religion, and it makes me wonder how much it has to do with the attitudes towards women in a patriarchal religion versus a matriarchal one.
I admire anyone who uses their faith as a bedrock in their lives; it has done some wonderful things for people. I just wish that America would be slightly less loud in people's deep need to display their religious orientation so outwardly. That's when conflict and judgement happens.

I think the conclusions Durkheim (and others) reach about the useful aspects of religion are spot on -- though I think it's in humanity's best interest to figure out how to do those socially important functions without the slippery slope of dogmatism and myopia.
The deepest problem with religion as it stands is that it encourages people to make profound conclusions without any hard evidence, and then tells people that other groups that come to different profound conclusions are wrong (what penalty that wrongness entails depends on your particular sect - ranging from nothing to eternal damnation). Thanks to religion's claim to absolute truth & morality, we end up with the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, 9/11, the non-use of condoms in AIDS-stricken countries, abortion clinic bombings, the suppression of scientific advances, etc., etc.
I think we can have social institutions that help knit society together and still encourage a healthy skepticism about anyone knowing what happens after we die, or that there's some supernatural being out there (and that some people know what it wants us to do).

Coming to think of it, religion is not only responsible for some of the problems in the world today, it is responsible for all the problems in the world. Think about it, if there was no religion, there would be no good or wrong-no morality. In some bizzare incidents, evil can be used to achieve a good goal, and as such, what gives religion the right to judge people. I was thinking about writing another paper detailing how religion brough about capitalism and how that inadvertently brought about corruption and racism-the social ills in the contemporary society.
