Deconstructing Stereotypes: Why I hate Regis and Kelly as of 10 seconds ago

So I woke up early this morning to finish up some stuff for work.

In the background I was listening to the news and there was a promo for "Regis and Kelly" with them saying that Carla Gugino was going to be on the show.

I did a happy dance as Carla is playing my favorite character from "watchmen" = Sally Jupiter aka Silke Spectre 1 (her daughter in the story over takes the handle as Silke Spectre). My brains (the comic book fan and the film producer sides) argue with each other on which is more exicted to see this interview.

Whoo hoo! So I am watching the interview and Carla goes on to tell a story about when the cast and the director (Zak Synder) went to San Diego Comic Con.

I need to make a side note about San Diego- This is the only convention that is covered by mainstream press, in part because Hollywood has over taken this convention in the last oh, decade, to do a media blitzkrieg for any and all films tied to comics, LARP games and sci-fi stuff. Mainstream media TOTALLY focuses on the wrong side of comic book fans..

It pisses me off, but I digress.

So Carla explains that they were in this big panel room  of like 8 thousand people (not surprised...I really am not) and there are people coming up to a mic to ask question to the cast and crew.

One guy comes up to the mic dressed as another charcter from the film (Rorschach- probably the most popular character from the series) just to ask Synder if the costume he is wearing is realistic enough for Synder's taste. Carla goes on to explain how dumbfounded she is by how dedicated to the characters etc of comics.

Thank you Ms. Carla Gugino for seeing how us fans really are.

Kelly goes on to make the comment in which said fan probably only wears this costume and nothing else. Regis joins in heckling said fan and making a costume.

I cannot begin to explain how much this pisses me off. In the percentage of all comic book fans in the world only about say, 10% dress up in characters. Out of the 10%, 8% REALLY invest into these costumes. Hell some of the people I have seen at cons I want to hire as costume crew for the work they have done in their free time.

Yet, thanks to EW and other outlets covering San Diego, and people like Kelly and Regis, this stereotype is getting more and more and more into the mainstream collective conscience thought. It's not true folks.

Hell even if it was, that EVERY SINGLE FAN dressed up in costumes for comic con, can you tell me how this is different than say the fans I see at the Roosevelt Red Line every weekend during the winter in orange and blue war paint, dressed head to toe in orange and blue on their way to a game of a crappy football team?

Or how about my friend's family that has a WHOLE ROOM and a CAR that are green and gold? We call it the packer-mobile.

THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMIC BOOK FANS AND SPORTS FANS!

NONE.

Here is a great example. I just did a couple of quick snaps with my blackberry so forgive the blurriness.

This is one wall of my house.

The top 3 posters are from a promo for X3. I love these characters and the way they shot the 1 sheets for the film (the film is a different story)

The bottom left pictures is a sketch of daredevil that one of my  old comic shop buddies did for me.

The middle one are two sketches: dare devil by Gaydos and the smaller one (this is a rare folks) done by Daredevil writer Brian Michael Bendis. He refuses to do sketches anymore. The only reason I got one was because I threw a surprise joke/choc. cake at a con for him for his birthday.

The other one is a daredevil and elektra sketch that I bought off of Ebay years ago to add to my collection. What is missing (because I just found them) is another daredevil sketch done by my fellow board mate (and writer Mike Oeming's wife) Taki Soma and a sketch that Mike Oeming (artist/writer of Powers and Thor) of Thor. Of course since I am a film person, I ended up getting a free copy of the Ghost Rider 1 sheet. It is going into my collection of film posters that I have.

Here is another picture.

The top three things hanging on the wall (from left to right)

1. Print that I bought from Daredevil/Kabuki writer/artist David Mack (he also signed it) this is the cover he did to Daredevil issue #53. It's my favorite cover EVER (it part because Native American/Latina character Echo- that he created- is on the cover with Matt)

2. Hard to see, but this is a print plate from back in the day before everything went to digital. Its the magenta plate for an Ad to Kabuki. I bought it off of Ebay, and showed it to Mack-daddy (or how us insiders also now refer to him as "The High Priest of Love") he was shocked that I found/bought it and signed it for me.

3. Another Print from the High Priest of Love cover to Daredevil Issue #20. David got a kick out of the fact that this cover I actually wrote a paper on for my English/Comic book class when I was at College of Lake County (in that class, I also wrote a post modern theory paper on Watchmen and also a paper proving how the fantastic four are representations of sexual dievence)

The flowers that are there? A birthday present I got from my Best friend of 12 years who I will refer to here (like I do on my comic boards) as Dirty Esmerelda. The action figures that I haven't put up yet (daredevil, elektra and Scarab from Kabuki) that are to the left of it are from her also.

Notice my bookshelves. Three shelves are novels. The two bottom shelves are my TRADE PAPER BACKS (they are not graphic novels) between my room mate and me. I have 3 paper ream boxes at my mom's full of more Trades.

But even if I showed you ever single book I owned- my novel collection outweighs my trade paper back collection 2 to 1.

Also at my mom's is 4 more action figures (more variations of daredevil and elektra) and 4 bust statues (ultimate thor, thorin from Earth X series, Daredevil and Elektra).

My DVD collection? My brother laughs at me because as a film person he would expect that I have more DVD's then him. I am just much more selective of what I waste my money on to Hollywood.

But There are at least 150 DVDs between me and my roommate.

Out of those these are the following comic book releated ones:

Xmen 1.5, X2, X3, Daredevil (director's cut), Men in Black 2, Road to Perdition, American Splendor, Blade 1, Blade 2, V for Vendetta, Teen Titans Seasons 1-4, Punisher, Spiderman 1 and 2, Iron Man, Fantastic Four,  Ultimate Avengers 1 & 2, Next Avengers, Dr. Strange, Invincible Iron Man, Hulk Vs Thor/Wolverine (From Ultimate Avengers to Hulk these are feature length cartoons that Marvel does)

Here's a link to Brian Michael Bendis' webboard- probably the most popular web board in the comic book industry (tied with Mark Millar's Millarworld site)

http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/forumdisplay.php?f=8

at any given point- esp when there is a hot news Item, you can see it pop up here. Yes we talk about comics. Duh. We also got obama threads, there was one at one point about octomom etc etc etc

And there is a reason that this post is so long etc. I wanted to show you all the stuff that the media doesn't. Am I a comic book fan? as Tony my trainer would say : Hella yeah. I am one of a hand ful of fan chicks that is a known "horn head" (Daredevil fan). Guess what? I DON'T DRESS UP AS DAREDEVIL, ELEKTRA, BLACK WIDOW or ECHO.

Nope.

But I am a true die hard fan chick.

:)

So Regis and Kelly can kiss my horn head loving butt. :)

Re: Deconstructing Stereotypes: Why I hate Regis and Kelly...

Cultural historians divide the career of the comic book in the U.S. into several ages or historical eras: the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age, and the Modern Age. The exact boundaries of these eras, the terms for which originated in the fandom press, is a debatable point among comic book historians. Meanwhile, Playstation 2 is among the most successful gaming platforms of all time. Despite its release back in 2000, the Playstation 2 is still a top seller, and is the best selling gaming console to date. You won't need payday loans to get one anymore either, as Sony has announced a PS2 price cut down to $100. The library of games is extensive, and Sony is still releasing games for the PS2, 8 years after its release. Other game consoles were in direct competition, as the console upon release was immediately in competition with Nintendo and Microsoft game platforms, both of which did well but not nearly as well as the Playstation 2.

Huh?

Half of your post makes sense, but the other half comes across as spammish Fatima. I'm lost!

Golden/Silver age? That's legit. Fans don't really use the terms of Bronze or Modern Age... pretty much everything from the 1990's on is known as the "Diamond Age".

It comes across as spammish because it's spam.
