Every once in a while we in the LGBT community get to take a step back and congratulate somebody for coming out of the closet. Well, maybe not every once in a while these days. It certainly seems like more and more celebrities and the like are coming out. Yet, on these occasions we get the chance to thank that person for coming out of the closet, facing their own demons and having the courage to stand up for what is right.
Three days ago John Amaechi became the first NBA player in history to come out of the closet. This was Amaechi's first public acknowledgement that he was gay. Amaechi joined the NBA in 1995 playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers and later Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz. He earned fame in the NBA by scoring the first few points of the new millennium in 2000. To all those homophobic basketball lovers: how do you like `dem apples?
