Gun bans, indoctrination by liberals and gays, and more: It's Right Wing Watch on Campus!

Liberal indoctrination, gun bans and “pro-homosexual clubs”... it’s another Right Wing Watch on Campus round-up!

But first: What do you do when Ann Coulter comes to your campus? 2008 fellow Betsy Ott at Northern Michigan University organized a Truth Rally with the Progressive Student Roundtable “to promote diversity, tolerance [and] acceptance.”

High school principal outs gay students; ACLU gets involved

PageOneQ just posted about a principal in Memphis, Tennessee who maliciously outed at least one same-gender couple to their parents, classmates and teachers:

According to Nicholas' mother Nichole, the principal said that she didn't tolerate homosexuality in the school and repeatedly asked if she knew her son was gay. The honor student underwent further humiliation, in addition to verbal harassment, when taken out of the running for a class trip to New Orleans related to rebuilding efforts, as a risk to the school's image; Nicholas was told that there were fears he'd embarrass the school by engaging in "inappropriate behavior."

HRC touts its own misleading poll

The Advocate has a story today that claims that "70% of LGBT people surveyed favor passing a non-inclusive ENDA over passing nothing at all."

The poll specifically asked "This proposal would make it illegal to fire gay, lesbian, and bisexual workers because of their sexual orientation. This proposal does not include people who are transgender. Would you favor or oppose this proposal moving forward?"

There's a lot more going on there than HRC is admitting, and the question is incredibly misleading.

I've been looking, and came to the disappointing realization that my college does not have a gay-straight alliance, or any glbt organizations. I've researched how to get a club started, but am still not sure where to start. does anyone have any suggestions?

The Log Cabin Gets a New Wing

It seems like just yesterday that sex scandals were the domain of democrats like Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy. However those scandals  pale in comparison to recent debauchery in the republican party. It appears that the intense hyper masculine culture and homophobia that are cornerstones of the conservative movement have backfired into what can only be described as a raunchy gay sex romp. Most recently, Senator Larry E. Craig of "I-da-ho" flirtatiously tapped his foot to try to hook up with an undercover officer in an airport restroom. Evidently Senator Craig didn't learn his lesson from Florida State Rep Bob Allen who was also arrested for soliciting sex in a public restroom. Fortunately for the republicans there have been recent scandals that didn't involve gay sex, scandals that involve frozen cash, escorts, and coke.

Since when did the "big tent" become the "big log cabin" for republicans? Perhaps a better question is if the Log Cabin needs a new addition to make room for its gays? Would that addition be a restroom?

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell"... wait, so you mean... ignorance IS a smart military policy?

Insert powerful quote here. "Gays are pedophiles who engage in a self-destructive and immoral life-style." - Anonymous Armed Forces General.

Sarcastic Author Response. Okay great, thank you worthy source, Mr. Anonymous!

Background. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", a law compromised by Clinton in 1993 after much right-wing "protest", is the one and only law in the United States that pointedly mandates firing someone because of his or her sexual orientation. A law that the very essence of which basically says, "We don't want to know... so we'll turn our backs, but if we find out that you're out, then you're out".

Point. To uphold such a policy, one that considers ignorance as bliss (i.e., "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"), and chooses rather to ignore the "issue" as if it weren't the 800 lb. elephant in the room, is to inherently acknowledge that this "issue" that you don't really want to know (or ask) about, must actually be bad and wrong, immoral or guilt-ridden. Is that what our military is really saying here about homosexuality? Yes, yes it is.

"Fag Bug": Turning Hate into Dialogue

After discovering that her VW bug had been defaced by spray-painted messages of "fag" and "u r gay" (most likely triggered by a rainbow flag sticker on her car), Erin Davies' of Albany, NY decided to take action.

After driving to work in the vehicle, she noticed the amount of attention she received and the amount of dialogue she was sparking amongst pasersby.

Although initially embarrassed by the vandalism, it was the reactions to her vehicle that prompted her to not only continue driving it... but also use the situation to give people a reality check about the amount of intolerance and just plain hatred and homophobia that still exists towards LGBT folks in this country.

Hate Crimes Bill Passes House........bring on the veto.

The House passed the Local Law Enforcement and Hate Crimes Prevention Act today, with a vote of 237-180.

There's a mirror bill that's already on its way through the Senate.  The legislation would apply equal federal resources to domestic terror crimes that target an individual based on disability, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity. Currently, these resources are only provided to local law enforcement agencies if a crime targets an individual based on race, color, national origin or religion.

Within hours of the bill passing, the White House had already issued a statement indicating Bush's intent to veto it.

Does Murdoch's Myspace Mandate Morality?

Many were confounded today to find that the popular online networking site MySpace had made a stunning move. The site had removed the option to self-identify as "gay" in their background & lifestyles portion of the online profile.

The buzz has been happening all day, some saying it was a programming error, which those experienced in programming saying that such a change had to be purposeful.

Some even say that such a move by Rupert Murdoch, who purchased MySpace not too long ago and openly homophobic, would not be unexpected.
