An Eye for an Eye? What to do when Activism becomes Terrorism

Beverly Halloran | July 8, 2008 - 3:40 pm

I am all about ending testing on animals...I think that it is a disgusting
practice that does a lot more harm than good.

I am also a huge advocate for free speech. If you want to protest against
something you believe is wrong, you most definitely have the right to do so.

What I do not support, however, is protestation which is, in reality, thinly
veiled terrorization.

I Can Count on Your Support, Right?

Recently, I was dealt a rather hard blow when my chosen presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, failed to win the nomination. I had put a lot of effort into her campaign, and I was very disapointed to see her lose.

Upon coming home one weekend, I met up with some of my "conservative" friends back home and the topic of the Presidential election came up. Most of my friends assumed that because Clinton had lost, I would be falling back on Obama as my candidate of choice. When I replied that I wasn't yet sure who I would support, my friends looked at me.

"Well, you aren't going to support McCain, so what other choice is there?"

Put a Pin in It

Had this sent to me from a friend in Dallas...you would think that our leaders would have more class than this, regardless of party.

Hillary Clinton: Taking a Sledgehammer to the Glass Ceiling

Like any ardent Clinton supporter, I was prepared yet bitterly saddened by the final conclusion of the Democratic primary. Never in my life had I knocked on more doors, called more people, or attended more rallies.

I have admired Hillary for years. In fact,I wrote my free thought college admissions essay on Hillary and the lasting power of sexism.

Its hard to wake me up on a Sat before noon- but today I made an exception. I was there in person to see her launch her campaign, and even if I couldn't be there in person today, I was going to be an avid TV viewer.

Gay Marriage- What are we really fighting for?

Beverly Halloran | May 27, 2008 - 1:21 am

ok, so this particular blog entry might create some controversy, but the notion was just too interesting not to share.

I am currently taking a summer course entitled: Queer Theory, Policy, and Practice at the University of Illinois. I took the class to fulfill a major requirement, but honestly it has been one of the most exciting classes I have taken while in college.

This past week our discussion has centered on gay marriage- and the conversation has gotten rather heated. The central point of contention is whether the use of gay marriage as a rallying point for gay liberation is a positive thing, or if this rallying point actually negates the entire notion of queer liberation.

Nuture Over Nature?

Maybe I am the only one that will find this disturbing, but a recent Time article really threw me for a loop.

Background: A man in Tallahassee went to court to fight for rights to see his son. He had DNA tests to prove that he was biologically the father and had pictures of himself and his son together. The child was the result of an affair the man had while the husband of the child's mother was stationed at a nearby naval base.

The case sounds pretty straightforward. The man can prove paternity and there is no mention in the article of any sort of criminal background or other problem that would prevent him from having his rights as the father.

He lost. Not only was he denied any sort of custody, he was denied any interaction with his son.

Hey, Tom Cruise- Want to Work at My Pharmacy?

Ok... so I have a serious problem with pharmacy laws in Illinois. Under current laws, pharmacists are not required to fill prescriptions if they interfere with the pharmacists religious or moral beliefs...although the pharmacy is required to find a way to get the drug the customer requests. Of course, this is so broad that here, we have a serious problem with women not being allowed birth control, Plan B, etc. Target is one of the number one violators- and I swear I see a story almost every day on another woman that has to get in the car or get on a bus to travel an obscene distance to fill a prescription.

Wait, You're Pro-Life? I'm Sorry, But You're Going to Have to Leave

I don’t support abortion rights (you can start throwing stones now) and in high school, the fact that I was pro-life also seemed to mean that I was automatically an anti-feminist.

Ok, maybe you might need some context.

All The Way?

So, I totally just posted an entry today, but after tonight’s election results I just couldn't resist. I am a die-hard Clinton supporter, I really think she is the best possible person to run the White House, but before tonight I had accepted her fate. I figured that even if she stayed in the race after tonight, she would become just a stumbling block on Obama's path to the presidency. And then- the unthinkable happened- Clinton won Ohio and Texas and once again everything is up in the air.
