Change, Progression, and Purpose
Creating Your Vision
What is your vision for the campus and/or community?
I see a community of powerful individuals who work together for the benefit of all. A bold community whose citizens can openly express their views in public settings with open dialogue about issues and topics affecting their community.
I see a community full of achievers. A community that inspires other communities to dream and achieve greatness.
Assessing Your Campus and Community
What campus/community problem does your blueprint address? What structures, practices and policies institutionalize the problem?
My Blueprint (Change, Progression, and purpose), addresses the lack of involvement within our community. This all stems from the lack of information on behalf of the informed. Far too few people believe that they can make a difference. This too stems from a lack of involvement on our part. There's no structure, practice, or policy more debilitating to the human soul than despair. For the moment, this is the reality we citizens face. My blueprint is summed with two words, "Believe Again".
What communities will you work with?
- Campus community
- Local community
- Statewide community
- Nationwide community
Setting Goals and Deliverables
- Goal 1: To set up a successful speaking forum that will bring resources and awareness to my campus and inspire innovation in my community.
- Find and reserve a venue for the event (Completed- FCC Theatre Sept. 11, 2008)
- organize a committee and delegate responsibilities for the event (Completed)
- Research the issue or policy that is the focus of the event. Compose the speech.
- Draw a crowd of 200 for the event
- Goal 2: To raise students activism involvement on campus by implementing a blueprint that current and future students can carry on.
- Create a full media blitz w/ street team promotions, local radio commercials, and strategic word of mouth.
- Create a sample worksheet expressing the event, idea, and needed committees to plan the event. (Completed)
- Coordinate student leadership meetings to discuss sustainablity and coordinate annual events in which students carry on the blueprint.
What is your primary approach? Organizing
Why did you choose this approach?
I've seen the affects of strong organizing, and the results of poor organizing as well. In the planning stages of an event, effective and efficient organization is essential. Through leadership development, we can help spread awareness by organizing meetings, events and fundraisers on campus as well as in the community.
Did you have secondary approaches? What are they?
My secondary approach can be seen as a mixture of idea creation and network alliance building. An idea can effectively deliver the message needed to increase social awareness. We can't fix something we don't identify with which is why idea creation is an effective tool used to promote awareness. Networking alliance building can add to the overall effectiveness of an idea. Alliance building opens the door to new resources which may have not been explored without that relationship.
What will your tactics and activities be?
My chief tactic will be to engage the students through entertainment and expose them to social activism through arts and expression. My initial tactic will be to organize a committee. Once the committee is together, the various aspects of the event will be broken down and delegated to various members. I've been totally motivated by the idea of accomplishing my goals. I understand the time involved with organizing a community event. I've given myself 6 months of cushion to get it together. The process is one of endurance as opposed to speed. I have to make sure I move forward daily; at a methodic pace.
Connecting Back to Vision
How does your strategy contribute to your vision for your campus and/or your community?
Within the strategy there's a tremendous amount of teamwork involved; which is one of the keys to a progressive movement. Then you take the many victories that come during the journey of implementing such a strategy. In this, we can see the inspirational value of carrying out the plan. Once completed, you have a beautiful event that inspires others to believe that they can achieve also. On top of that, you give the public a voice through an interactive forum that informs and discusses current issues in our communities while looking for answers and effective strategies for change. This is definately a worthwile event.
Resources and skills you will need
