ABOUT THE APPLICATION:
Can I partially fill out the application online and return to it later?
No, our current online software does not provide for this. However, you CAN download the Microsoft Word application and save it, that way you can make edits to your text as you see fit and submit it via email for early consideration by October 2nd, all applications are due October 31st. Do you have to be a college student to apply? What is the age range of participants?
There is no level of schooling required by the program. Like the YEO Network and YP4, our focus is on progressive young leaders, so FLLA accepts applicants between the ages of 18 and 35 with a passion for progressive change.
If I am currently in office can I be in the program?
The program is designed to train young leaders who aspire to run for office, become campaign mangers and other fields in the public service arena. The program is not recommended for currently elected officials. If you are already a Young Elected Official, contact the YEO Network for more information on how we may meet your specific needs.
Can I apply if I am currently running for office?
Any declared candidates participating in FLLA must pay in advance all costs associated with the training sessions. Please contact us at flla.application@gmail.com if this is your case.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
How long does the program last?
The Academy lasts six to eight months from acceptance to graduation. During these months, there are four in-person conferences to attend, several intermediate assignments, regular conference calls, and a few online chats. After the Academy concludes, graduates continue a relationship with the YEO Network, Young People For, and People For the American Way Foundation, further nurturing their work in the progressive movement.
How much does it cost?
There is a one-time tuition fee to be paid before the first conference of $250. If applicants cannot afford this cost, tuition waivers are available and should be noted in the application. Participants will be responsible for their own travel costs. Travel scholarships are available on a needs basis.
All program costs associated with lodging and accommodations during FLLA will be paid for by People For the American Way Foundation.
Provided that the applicant is not, and does not become, a declared candidate for public office during the term of the Academy, they will NOT be charged any fee additional to the tuition fee & travel expenses for participating in the program.
When are the conferences? Are they required?
There are four required conferences that every fellow must attend in order to graduate from the program. They are held Friday-Sunday to prevent conflict with work and school.
Where will the conferences be?
The program trainings will be held in several locations across the nation, and are yet to be determined for the class of FLLA 2012. Fellows will have the opportunity to travel to different parts of the country and meet progressive leaders in the area, including Young Elected Officials and campaign professionals. Again, travel expenses are the responsibility of participants. Travel scholarships are available on a needs basis.
Is there a location requirement to participate in FLLA?
FLLA applicants come from across the country, and location within the United States does not determine acceptance into the program. FLLA welcomes applicants from all 50 states, no matter the origin of birthplace.
