Students across the nation are avid supporters and defenders of civil rights; yet more often than not, the fight for civil liberties exists as an idealistic notion only, never quite materializing. 2007 YP4 Fellow Anders Ibsen-Nowak is working to combat this trend and mobilize the Evergreen State College community around the issue. Anders is working to establish a sustainable ACLU chapter at Evergreen State College by organizing "likeminded students" and reaching out to younger students.

Anders plans to draw support from the Evergreen Student Union and new student journals as well as regional and state networks of ACLU chapters. By creating alliances throughout the state, he is working towards his ultimate goal of enhancing knowledge and advocacy for both students and the larger community.  Heeding the advice and support of sympathetic faculty members, Anders hopes to begin working towards his vision of "a world where the grassroots and institutional power supplement and strengthen each other, and are both aimed towards the achievement of progressive ends."
