Working for democracy
Earlier this summer I joined Matt Popek in calling upon all of you to use the knowledge you gain in preparing yourself to vote to help others exercise that right. Now is the time for you to put that call into action.
People For the American Way Foundation will soon begin sharing volunteer information with interested activists like yourself. Our goal is to get the first emails out the week of September 15. Even if you've volunteered or signed up before, please sign up again so you can be sure that you're on the new list with your current information. We hope to showcase a number of exciting partnerships, as well as host our own online and conference call trainings.
Speaking of exciting partnerships, we'll be supporting the "Pollworkers for Democracy" efforts of CREDO Mobile: "to recruit, train, and network 5,000 citizen pollworkers for the November 4, 2008 election and beyond. Official pollworkers have a vital role in running fair, accountable elections in which all eligible voters are able to cast their ballots and have them counted."
We'll once again be involved with the Election Protection Hotline. 1-866-OUR-VOTE is staffed by volunteer attorneys who provide free, multi-lingual assistance to help voters with questions about registration and voting, and assist voters turned away at the polls.
Voter ID News: Tanya Clay House, Director of Public Policy at our affiliate People For the American Way, just got back from the Twin Cities where she participated in a panel on voter ID at the Republican National Convention. Voter ID may seem like no burden to those of us lucky enough to have a current driver's license, but many people find it a great barrier to the voting booth. Click here for more information.
