addressing the non-existent problem

While reading a posting on feministing about the tactics that people use to get statistics out about rape I came to think about the task that lies before me.

Tomorrow is the first meeting of Project Dignity, the human rights educational group on campus that I have started and that Young People For has helped and supporting me with every step of the way. Of course I have some idea of what I want to accomplish and what my deliverables and goals are. This does not mean however that I know the best way in which to accomplish these. I find myself asking, what is the best way to address such a serious issue? How do we show the seriousness without sacrificing the emotional implications of those whom we are trying to help? In a community that does not feel the need to support the victims in the first place how can we even begin to fill that void?

In a place where people are vocal about a problem that exists it is understandable that there will be those that will be affected both negatively and positively by something like Rape Awareness Month events and educational tactics. But In a place where the only person you are advised to turn to is the dean of chapel and something as heinous as sex (let alone rape) does not exist, how do you even begin?

After many questions have surfaced and drowned their predecessors I realize that simply the fact that we are willing to try to change what we see as inadequate in our communities is action enough, regardless of the amount of change we see in our time.

We will move mountains or we will move a pebble. Either way there's movement.

tough places to be

as someone who's been where you find yourself now, i have to agree with you. sometimes the task at hand seems so huge in an environment where people might not even agree that injustice is a problem.

at the same time, sometimes the simple action of taking a stand in those environments can change lives. keep on doing what you're doing, and reach out for support whenever you may need it. we're behind you all the way!
