The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Amina is an advisory member and former director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations–UIUC, a university branch of the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group in the nation. This year she is also the chair of the Muslim Students Association's annual spring conference, an event that attracts hundreds of students across the Midwest and allows them the opportunity to listen to and engage with the top Islamic scholars in America. Amina is also actively involved in campus coalitions working towards peace, justice and equality at the University of Illinois.
