The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Alicia has worked extensively in the realm of women and politics and is a strong advocate of working within our democratic and legal systems for change. She has interned for the Minnesota State Senate, Planned Parenthood of Sioux Falls, S.D., and WATCH (the nation's first court monitoring organization dedicated to issues of domestic, sexual and child abuse) and is starting an internship in the Minnesota office of U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar in January 2008. On campus, Alicia is a senator for the College of Liberal Arts, a member of the Student Senate Consultative Committee, and the legislative affairs chair of the Minnesota Student Association, her student government.
