The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Ashley is the secretary of SMU Students for a Better Society. This organization focuses on promoting progressive ideas and social change through various educational and/or public service events. She hopes to grow to be a better leader and learn new ways to make her voice heard on a campus that consists of a mostly politically conservative student body.
