The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Chelsea, a junior at Barnard College in New York City, grew up in Minneapolis, Minn. Chelsea is active in the student government on the Barnard campus, serving as president of her first-, second-, and third-year classes. In the summer of 2007 she interned with womenwinning, a nonpartisan organization that encourages women to run for political office at all levels. Chelsea also participated in the White House Project's Go Run political training in New York City in the summer of 2007. Last summer she interned for the King's Country District Attorney's Office, where she interviewed victims of domestic violence in the counseling services unit. Most recently she interned at the New York Legal Assistance Group, assisting with legal research in areas of housing and benefits. Chelsea's passion is to encourage women to run for political office at all levels of government.
