The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Jonathan is extensively involved in his campus and community. Among the leadership positions he assumes at his campus are: Social Vice Chair of Pi Sigma Alpha (National Political Science Honorary Society), and Volunteer Chair of the College of Liberal Arts. He hopes to work on issues important to the UIUC community after the Summit.
