The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Jamel is Treasurer of the Student Government Association, Business Manager for UNCF, Secretary of Black Male Coalition, and founding father of BPTU (Brothers Perservering Through Unity). When Jamel isn't in the classroom, he is usually practicing his saxophone or oboe in his room, or operating his business A&M Financial Services, Inc. Jamel has had various community service projects, such as performing music for various functions in the community and working for local politicians in the Long Island area.
