The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Working with preservation groups on Michigan's Upper Peninsula gave Lain a deep connection to issues of environmental justice. As an active member of the Northern Michigan College Democrats and Model U.N., she has cultivated a leadership role and seeks to engage all students with the issues that surround them. Young people's lack of involvement in political movements frustrates Lain, but she has great hope for a youth renaissance in the progressive movement.
