The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Luke is a student senator on the Oberlin College Student Senate, a student-run organization that seeks to protect and enhance student rights and direct student dialogue with the college administration. Currently, Student Senate is working on student wage reform in relation to the student activity fee, creating a "green fund" to sponsor environmentally progressive projects, and expanding all-gender bathrooms on campus. Luke hopes that with these progressive goals Senate can help increase social activism on campus and celebrate individual diversity.
