The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Leah is the chair of the University of Miami chapter of Amnesty International (AIUSA) and an AIUSA student area coordinator in South Florida. As an activist, writer and musician, Leah is most interested in using creative expression to foster discourse about progressive causes and to convey the moral imperative of youth engagement. Although she has always felt the desire to be active, it was her experience living in New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina that fueled her drive for change.
