The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Matt is a rising senior in the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University, majoring in urban and regional development within the Department of Geography. He is a founding member and current president of Represent Penn State, a nonpartisan student voter registration organization dedicated to increasing political activism and voter turnout among the student population. He has been successful at drawing attention to the general lack of student voting and helped to double on-campus voter turnout in the 2006 general election compared to four years prior. He is devoted to social progressivism and engaging other students in all levels of the political process.
