Mary was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1988. She and her family were forced to abandon their country and found help by entering the United States as refugees. During her sophomore year in high school, she visited Washington, D.C. for the first time through a program called Close Up Washington for New Americans. She was later in the first citywide Student Development Council, where she worked to find solutions for the many issues that affected the Chicago Public Schools. She was named senior class president and also participated in a program called Project Exploration that focused on making scientific knowledge available for youth from low-income and minority backgrounds.
