The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Maya currently works as an instructor for Celebrate Native Health and the Oklahoma Indian education program. Maya's goal is to develop a youth program that will use positive elements of Native culture to replace the negative aspects of gang lifestyles, which she sees as the major force working against the children of her community. She believes that young people should be fire tenders, passing on the flames of hope and change to the generations that will follow.
