The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Between war and the erosion of our civil liberties, the current state of our country has both left Russell frustrated and motivated him to take positive action. In taking a leadership role around these issues, Russell wants to reclaim and rededicate a generation of young people who frequently shy away from social movements and community action.
