The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Steve is the founder of Men Against Sexual Violence (MASV) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). MASV is a group for men dedicated to stopping sexual and domestic violence on UIC's campus and in its surrounding communities. MASV is an ally group that works with UIC's Feminists United and Campus Advocacy Network as well as other organizations in the community to address the issue of violence and its effect on men. MASV believes that even if men are not perpetrators or victims of violence, they have an obligation to speak up and denounce violence, as they are adversely affected by rigid roles that encourage violence and other negative qualities within men.
