The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

A sophomore at the University of Arkansas, Shayne is the student chair of Honors College recruitment, an ambassador for the university, and a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Shayne has worked with several progressive campaigns and was chosen as a student representative for Mike Beebe's successful campaign for governor of Arkansas. He spent the summer after his freshman year in Central America working with Peace- Work on community development and environmental sustainability projects, including developing a management plan for a national park in Belize and ensuring the protection of a village's water source. He seeks, above all, to be a catalyst of progressive action at the University of Arkansas.
