The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Steve is the state of Michigan coordinator of a presidential campaign. As state coordinator, he works with the national campaign, along with students and supporters around the state to educate the public about the campaign. Steve is also an active member of the Michigan State University College Democrats. In the past, Steve has volunteered with the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, the Debbie Stabenow for U.S. Senate campaign in 2006, and was an intern in the executive office of Governor Jennifer M. Granholm.
