The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Theresa is the president emeritus of Students Together Ending Poverty (STEP) at the University of Miami. She has also served as international chairperson for the University of Miami's collegiate branch of Rotary International. She has worked for social justice and stood for the poor in the United States as well as Peru, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. Theresa is a co-founder of the child sponsorship program Hogar Escuela Genesis in Santiago, Dominican Republic. This year, Theresa hopes to implement a system of microlending at the University of Miami.
